A papa reef runs intermittently from Langs nor-west to the Waipu river mouth and all the way to Uretiti. The kayak fishers are reporting some good snapper – one kayaker is said to have notched up two 20-pound specimens in the last week, soft-baiting not far off the Waipu Cove beach. He also reports catching good numbers of gurnard in this zone on a mixture of lures and soft-baits.
The family’s week concluded with a solid snapper session in Bream Bay itself, fishing in 20 metres off Langs Beach. He also headed SE towards Little Barrier, where he and his crew encountered plenty of bait, dolphins and the odd whale. While towing the baits, a couple of anglers have been on the bow casting soft-baits to snapper with great success. Tony reports a steady kingfish bite at the Mokohinaus, with fish to 120cm+ being caught on slow-trolled live-baits.
